Writing Prompts For Poets

I’m going to share a secret… I used to write a lot of poetry. I even had a few poems published in those high school and college anthologies that they get your to buy so you can have bragging rights!

The poems were not very good by poetry standards.

Then when I was 17 I won a college poetry contest. Now that was a big deal. We could bring two people with us to the event that was held at Bemidji State University. We got served a nice meal and then they did poetry readings. We could either read the poetry ourselves and have one of the professors read our poems.

I had someone read mine because there were well over 200 people there and I was very shy back then!

I brought my mom and her best friend with me. My mom cried when they read my poem. I had penned it after my younger brother had died at age 11 from cancer. I had written it from the point of view of a 17 year old (me) finding out I had cancer and the disbelief that would involve.

I can’t remember much of the poem but I do remember this line: “Come on, I’m 17, how could any cancer be found in me?”

The reading was very well-received.

Back at home, the librarian at my school who also happened to be a mentor to me, was so proud she insisted it go into the local newspaper!

Well, this post is about finding your muse when you are feeling stuck while struggling to write the piece of poetry you have in your mind.

Finding the Muse . . .

Ever stared at a blank page, waiting for the muse to strike? You’re not alone. Writing prompts are your go-to solution to combat that infamous writer’s block. They’re little nudges for your creative brain, coaxing words onto the page when inspiration seems miles away.

More than just idea-generators, prompts invite you to explore uncharted emotional terrain. They’re an open invitation to express yourself, to wade through the rivers of your inner world and pull out sentiments, reflections, and insights that might not surface otherwise.

Now, I want you to imagine using these prompts not just as exercises, but as stepping stones to a richer poetic practice. Each prompt is an opportunity to hone your skills, play with language, and evolve your unique poetic voice. So, let’s embrace them—not just for inspiration, but as tools for personal and artistic growth.

In the next section, ‘Nature’s Muse: Environmental Writing Prompts,’ you’re going to find out how the natural world serves as a canvas for your words. From the gentle whisper of leaves to the roaring passion of the oceans, nature’s myriad faces will lead us down paths ripe with poetic possibility.

Nature’s Muse: Environmental Writing Prompts

Now that you’ve got a sense of what writing prompts can do for you, let’s venture into the natural world for some fresh inspiration. There’s a reason why countless poets have found their muse in the environment: its intrinsic beauty, diversity, and the raw emotions it stirs. Whether it’s the serene tranquility of a flowing river, the untamed fury of a storm, or the stoic grandeur of mountain ranges, nature can offer an infinite palette for your words. It can make your words come to life!

To get started, consider how the changing seasons might mirror the transformations in your own life. A prompt might be as simple as “Write about the first bloom of spring and what new beginnings it signifies for you.” Or, as summer fades into fall, reflect on change and maturity with a prompt like, “Craft a poem that captures the essence of leaves changing color.” Winter, with its quiet and hibernation, could lead you to introspect and write about solitude or renewal.

Take it a step further by pondering the effects of weather on mindset and emotion. A thunderstorm might parallel a personal conflict or an uplifting breeze could symbolize freedom. Try this: “Compose a poem where the weather is not just the setting, but a character that influences the narrative.”

If you’re committed to environmental issues, let your poetry speak on behalf of the planet. Advocate for conservation, highlight the impacts of climate change, or celebrate the pristine beauty of protected areas. Your voice can be powerful in sharing the importance of environmental stewardship through poetry.

The key here is to let the natural environment guide your senses and emotions. Don’t worry too much about perfecting every line on your first go. Instead, choose something that resonates with you—a favorite place, a powerful memory of the outdoors, or concerns for the earth—and let your pen flow freely. You might just find that the environment is a co-author in your poetic journey.

The Human Experience: Prompts Exploring Emotions and Relationships

Writing poetry isn’t just about stringing words together; it’s also about tapping into the core of what makes us human. The canvas of poetry allows for the raw and honest portrayal of feelings that resonate with everyone at some point. With prompts related to the spectrum of human emotions, you’re going to find out about the complex interplay of sentiments and interpersonal connections.

You may want to explore the intense pull of love or the hollow ache of loss through your verses. Prompts such as ‘The last message they sent,’ or ‘Love in a language I don’t speak’ could be your starting blocks. Joy, another profound element, can be captured in lines that elevate mundane moments to celebrations. Consider prompts like ‘The laughter in the walls’ or ‘Sunlit smiles on a rainy day.’

Now what is a big publisher for the human soul if not sorrow? It’s a universal theme that poets often visit. Dive into its depths with prompts like ‘Echoes of goodbyes’ or ‘In the stillness of the night.’ What about the lyrical complexity of relationships? A prompt like ‘Two silhouettes on separate shores’ can help you unfold tales of connection and separation.

That’s the strategy I like to leverage: choosing prompts that push boundaries and invite readers to look at their own lives. I’m here to help you with prompts that could include ‘The silent language of our glances,’ or ‘A conversation that never happened,’ which aim to stir emotions and initiate contemplations about the intangible connections we share with others.

Through the Looking-Glass: Surreal and Imaginative Prompts

Now, let’s dive into a world where the only limit is your imagination. Through the looking-glass, things aren’t always what they seem and that’s exactly what makes these prompts so exciting.

Start with exploring dreamscapes. Have you ever woken up from a dream that felt more real than reality itself? Use the vivid imagery and bizarre events from your slumbers as fodder for your poems.

Why not dabble in the mythological? If you’re a fan of ancient legends and lore, this is your chance to reinvent age-old tales or craft your own from scratch. Picture yourself as a modern-day Homer or draw upon creatures from a fantasy world.

Consider writing about an alternate universe. How would things change if history had a different outcome? If the laws of physics were skewed? Unravel a poem that paints a picture of this altered existence.

End this section encouraging the reader to let their guard down. Creating surreal and imaginative poetry is an exercise in freedom. Remember, in this realm of poetry, rules are meant to be broken, so let your words flow without constraint.

Closing Thoughts and Next Steps for Aspiring Poets

You’ve ventured through a series of creative gateways designed to unlock the words that might be waiting on the tip of your tongue. Or better said, the tip of your pen! Prompts, like the ones we’ve explored in this article, are more than just springboards for creativity—they’re stepping stones on the path to finding your unique poetic voice.

Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to respond to a prompt. Whether you’ve crafted lines that are deeply personal or ventured into realms of wild imagination, each poem is a reflection of your inner world.

These prompts are just a beginning. You can mix and match them, twist them to your will, or even create entirely new ones inspired by them. The beauty of poetry is its boundless nature, so feel free to explore beyond the paths we’ve wandered today.

If you’re serious about your poetic endeavors, consider setting aside a little time each day to write. Consistency can turn these prompts into a wellspring of ideas, and before you know it, you’ll have a diverse collection of poems to share or refine.

Finally, if you’re looking for further guidance or inspiration, don’t hesitate to dive into the words of your favorite poets. Poetry anthologies, online forums, and writing workshops can offer new perspectives and supportive communities.

I really hope that you take these prompts and let them lead you on a journey of self-expression and growth. Keep your pen moving, and let the poetry flow from your heart to the page. Who knows?
